A point is always moot if it is debatable or unreliable, but it is only mute if it is silent. I hear too much of this in the workplace and during law school class sessions. I hear it from new hires and managers. I hear it from law student and law professors. I hear it on the news, and I hear it in the subway.
Everywhere I hear that the point is mute, I am forced to judge someone. I am forced to put on my word police hat and, in my mind of course, point like the Evil Monkey in Family Guy. I have no right to judge people, and I understand that. But that does not stop me from doing it.
I do not respect people who say an audible point is mute until they give me a very, very good post-saying-the-point-is-mute reason to respect them. Judging people makes me feel like an arrogant son of a bitch (and probably just plain makes me an arrogant son of a bitch). Help me not feel like an arrogant son of a bitch: just say the point is moot.
Please.
I’m begging you.
My ability to take you seriously depends on it.
